Dry January 5th – 30th Jan 2026

How to get started?

You’re finding us at the perfect time if you’ve ever thought about trying rowing or kick-starting a new fitness journey.

This January we are bringing back our the Dry January New Rowers Programme – an initiative designed to help you take those “new year, new you” resolutions and stick with them.

At SARC, January is our busiest time of the year for welcoming new members. That’s why we offer a free, month-long membership, giving you access to our club facilities and training sessions. You’ll start with a steady introduction to indoor rowing, learning proper technique and building confidence as we progress from beginner friendly workouts and build up the sessions until you’re rowing twice as far in half the time by the end of the month!

What to expect?

As a beginner wanting to improve fitness:

Rowing is one of the most effective full-body workouts for every fitness level and goal. Whether you’re looking to improve your strength, boost endurance, or simply try something new, rowing delivers results.

At SARC you’ll find a friendly and varied collection of members, some live to race and some join for the social atmosphere (did I mention we have our own bar?!)

Either way, you can push yourself as much as you want, the great thing about group workouts on the indoor rowers is that they don’t go anywhere and they give you all the metrics you could ever need to track improvements. The friendly encouragement of working out in a group makes it easy to stay motivated and finish your workout together but you don’t get left behind, your performance is between you and the machine. It’s a great way to boost fitness without the pressure of keeping up with a running group or navigating a crowded gym.

As an already active and competitive person:

If you’re already active, technique is everything. Most people have tried the rowerg at the gym, but without proper coaching, your form won’t be perfect and there will be loads of room for you improve your times. Throughout January we run a later session for more experienced or more competitive members of the club as they get ready for getting back on the water and racing in spring, if that’s where your goal is, that’s where we’ll take you. Start by coming down to the 6pm sessions and if you have a burning desire for some more erg based torture and ‘friendly’ competition we’ve got you covered. We race in 5+ regattas a year and compete in a range of age categories, so there’s always a race for you.

The sessions are pre planned by our captains and start with the form and technique, and build up in volume and intensity as the month goes on.

You can expect:

Team based erg relays

Circuit training

Intervals and sprint distances

Low intensity, longer distance rows

We’ll explain the purpose of each session, how we categorise these workouts and how that translates to individual goals and split times.

Most importantly the dry in Dry January is only in the literal sense – no boats, no water – not the non alcoholic sense, meaning you can expect the bar to be open every Friday after training for a well earned drink or two!

After that become a member for £10 a month, we continue indoor training until Spring and when the clocks go forward we hit the water for rowing

Sessions run every Monday, Wednesday and Friday evening from 6pm (you don’t have to come to all) from 5th – 30th Jan. 29 foreshore rd opposites the lifeboat station
